Alaska legalized medical cannabis in 1998 via Ballot Measure 8 and adult-use cannabis in 2014 through Ballot Measure 2, with retail sales beginning October 29, 2016. The Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office (AMCO), operating under the Marijuana Control Board (MCB) within the Department of Commerce, regulates all licensed cannabis activity. As of 2026, there are no statutory caps on the number of state licenses, though local jurisdictions may impose their own limits. Over 1.6 million cannabis products were sold in 2023, generating nearly $279 million in retail sales, with cumulative sales exceeding $1 billion by end of 2023. Alaska became one of the first states to license on-site consumption endorsements for retail establishments. Administrative Order 360 targets a 15% reduction in regulatory requirements by December 2026.
